Gin Fix with Infused Ice Cubes

Hey, everyone! I’m super excited to share that we have teamed up with The Botanist Gin to bring you a recipe for a classic gin fix cocktail with pretty infused ice cubes! These ice cubes are the perfect addition to your drink because the fresh ingredients compliment the 22 botanicals that make The Botanist Gin exceptionally unique and ideal for mixing in cocktails.  First, let’s start with the ice cubes! I picked six fresh fruit and herb combinations that I thought paired well together. You can make the same ones I made, or I encourage you to be a little adventurous and come up with your own. Take into account what’s in season and what flavors are going to compliment each other. These are the combinations I came up with:

  • strawberry basil
  • cucumber mint
  • lemon raspberry
  • blackberry sage
  • grapefruit rosemary
  • lavender lime

Tips: If you want a pretty ice cube, a good trick is using filtered water. You can also boil the water and then let it cool before you use it to ensure the clearest cube possible. We want to be able to see all of the pretty stuff we’re about to freeze in them! Also if you have trouble finding fresh lavender or it is not in season, you can use dried but just make sure it is food safe. You can find some here.   Next, you can fill your ice cube trays with your ingredients. The smaller fruit and herbs I left whole, but anything larger chop up into small pieces so you can fit them into the ice cube trays. Pour the filtered water on top and freeze until completely solid.  I tried to keep the cocktail simple, so we’re making a gin fix. This is basically a fresh gin lemonade, so you will need simple syrup (1:1 sugar and water), fresh lemon juice and The Botanist Gin. The Botanist Gin is a perfect compliment to the fresh fruits and herbs because of its complex flavors. There’s a really nice floral and herbal undertone.

I really wanted the ingredients used in the ice cubes to compliment the gin and to also make our cocktail more delicious in the process.

Gin Fix, serves 1

2 oz. The Botanist Gin
3/4 oz. lemon juice
3/4 oz. simple syrup

After juicing your lemons, add all ingredients to a shaker with ice and strain over an infused ice cube. Enjoy! Aren’t they SO gorgeous? These will totally impress your guests at your next spring or summer cocktail party!

   I really love this cocktail and how the ice cubes came out. The best part about them is they make a great addition to almost any drink. Nothing says spring more than fresh ingredients, lemonade on the porch and a little sunshine. Who agrees? -xo Natalie

      Juliette, this cocktail and ice cubes are very approachable. I think this is the perfect drink to maybe sway you into drinking Gin!

      Hi Elspeth. A gin fizz and a gin fix are similar because they both have lemon juice and sugar in them, but a fizz also has egg white and soda. The fix is a classic cocktail from a book called “How to Mix Drinks”, by Jerry Thomas circa 1862. Traditionally it is served on crushed ice but I thought it would be fun to do a large cube so we could infuse them!

  • I went on vacation and went to a bar where they had gin and tonic, and it tasted incredible!!! Turns out, they added in a few ice cubes that were lemon infused, so as you drank it, the lemon ice cubes started to melt and change the flavour of the drink…. incredible!!

  • They are beautiful! What size was the ice cube? I try to do something similar in the past but the ice cube never as pretty as I imagine.

  • In my experience using hot water to make your ice cubes delivers the clearest ice cubes yet. If you want to start with filtered water (especially for taste), and then boil, just fill your trays with the hot water & place in the freezer right away. Because the molecules are moving really fast from being hot, they will freeze quicker…a little science for ya! 😉

  • Oh, these are fantastic and makes me want a cup of gin! We’ve done this in water before, granted they didn’t turn out nearly as clean and beautiful haha, but I feel like this would be exceptionally refreshing with gin instead. I’ll have to add some next time we make infused ice cubes!
