Today I am super excited to share a tour of the newest completed room in our home, our kid-friendly guest room! Due to the fact that we moved seven hours away from our family and some of our closest friends this past year, it was a HUGE priority for us to create guest room(s) that are family friendly.
Most of our siblings and friends have young children, so our goal was to create a set up that would accommodate families comfortably. And – holy cow – have we USED these rooms. We’ve had guests 2-3 times per month since January.
We’ve often joked that we’re running a bed and breakfast over here, and we’re so grateful to invite our family and friends to come stay, often times impromptu, on a regular basis.
The Palm Springs theme came to me randomly, and I couldn’t get it out of my brain. I am OBSESSED with kid-versions of grown-up things (like outfits that look like tiny adults, or tiny kids’ kitchen sets or little kid-size cars).
So ultimately it seemed appropriate to create a kiddo version of my favorite place –Palm Springs, California. So I covered pages and pages of my journal with random ideas and things about Palm Springs that I wanted to give a “nod” to… see if you can spot them all!
In this basket, I started a fun collection of mid-century and Palm Springs inspired dress up things! It was a HUGE hit with Penelope as you will see below. 🙂
Collecting cute things like this is so much fun, and honestly, I have a lot of crazy clothes from my own collection that I just threw in there for them to play with.
The bunk beds were the starting point for my design. I knew I wanted to find beds where the bottom bunk was a full size (so adults could comfortably stay in this room too when needed).
I found this bunk bed frame for a pretty awesome price. We decided to paint it bubble gum pink. Speaking of bunk beds, you can learn how to make your own built-in set here!
Then the twin and full mattresses we have are from Casper, a company I was introduced to when they donated a (very comfortable) mattress to our Habitat For Humanity house last year. This setup has been incredibly functional!
Just got this pillow in the mail from Joy. So sweet!
There it is – our completed space!!!! Ready for some tiny tourists to come visit… oh wait, I see one now!
This pose was her idea, and I think she nailed it!

LOVE the pink bunks! Would you please share the brand and color of the paint? Thank you!
What color is the bunk? Thank you!!
Can I ask how the bunk bed has held up? J/w since mine would be for 2 little girls.
What a fun room! Love the theme, and all the tiny little accent pieces that fit so perfectly! That cactus stencil is a great idea. Something I never would have thought to do on my own, but is definitely intriguing.
I love this room so much <3 Any advice on painting this bunk bed? Did y'all prime it first??
This room is precious! Where is the bunk bed from? I am in the market for my littles.
Adorbs!!! What about the bedding?? LOVE the texture. Where is it from??
How did you hang the chair? Was it fairly easy?
Such a unique style of decor for a children’s room. Thanks for sharing.
Fantastic blog with excellent information and ideas, I would like to share my experience with trying to find child safe blinds that aren’t just the basic designs. I was thrilled to find a company that not only offered a large range of designs and colours for child safe blinds but also offer a custom photo blind, where you can choose from a stock image or upload your own picture to have printed on a made to measure roller blind, vertical blind, pleated blind and even a venetian blind! all child safe…. go wild!!

Hello Elsie,
I like the creativity. I think kids like it most. Nice Ides!
I think I need some of those cactus pillows for myself!
I love this so much I can’t handle it. Very cool.
Where is the pendant light from?
This was such a fun post and a fun design! I love the vibe of this room and how all the quirky little things come together to really bring you a solid feel for the room. The colors are so magical too! And, your niece is just too darn adorable, seems like she really loves this space too!

Super random question Elsie… how do you keep your vintage telephone clean?! I got one at a flea market but it looks really old and dirty 🙁 any suggestions?
Thanks!
ps. loved the room!
This is gorgeous!!! It makes me wish I had a spare room to turn into a proper guest room too – hopefully one day – and in the meantime I think I’ll just start dreaming up ideas for how to decorate it 🙂
Officially the cutest kid’s bedroom
