Want a fun challenge for yourself? Try making your favorite braid while upside down, or at least with your head flipped upside down. Bonus: the challenge will also yield a cute new hairstyle and twist on your favorite top knot or ballerina bun.
Or at least that is what I kept telling myself as I tried to learn this hairstyle with all the blood rushing to my head and my braids falling apart! But as with everything, it’s just a matter of practice makes perfect, so keep at it even if you’re initially struggling.
It’s really no harder than a traditional Dutch braid. It’s just a different angle that makes things a little more difficult at first.
Step One: Flip your hair forward and brush thoroughly; I like to keep my brush handy and continue to brush small sections as I go along.
Step Two: Take a small section at the nape of your neck and begin your braid.
Step Three: Add small pieces of hair to each section as you braid; tuck each section underneath the other sections for a Dutch braid like mine. (detailed tutorial on a Dutch braid here)
Step Four: You can stop adding hair to your braid when you reach your ears.
Step Five: Gather all of your hair and twist into a simple top knot; secure it with an elastic and a few bobby pins.
As always, I like to pancake my braid a bit for a fuller look – I’m addicted to thick braids! A smaller, tighter braid or even traditional French braid in this style is great for active days. I wore my hair like this for a hike recently, and it didn’t budge an inch.
I don’t usually wear my hair in a top knot, but now that I’ve mastered this style, I might wear my hair like that more. I’m already imagining more ways I can dress it up; maybe with a little braid around the bun or even a bit of ribbon… Cheers, Rebecca.

I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don’t know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often. Best wedding gown designer in the world
This is beautiful! I just need a person to do it for me, or I need to practice for hours!

Hi Amy, I’m using Garnier Fructis shampoo & conditioner right now, some type with argan oil and I also put argan oil into my tips when they’re drying. But I find not washing my hair too often and washing with cold water makes a bigger difference than the brand/type of shampoo I use.
When you say you wash your hair with cold water, do you do it in the sink, or do you mean like cooler than regular shower? Random, I know, but even a quick shock of cold at the end of my shower has me doing crazy yoga moves to keep it from hitting my back!
Hi Aleksandra, thanks! I only wash my hair with cold water and try not to wash it too often, that seems to help it stay bright 🙂
I love this really inventive look!

This was on my mind this unusually muggy morning as I prepared to go to the market. A no-hair-on-neck day. It wasn’t perfect, but it did hold all morning.
I love your hair, even though you say it’s not thick it really really healthy and textured. What shampoo and conditioner do you use?

I’ve tried this type of braid with a regular french braid, it’s really hard to do. Maybe the dutch braid will be easier. Yours looks amazing.

I feel ya! I just cut off most of my hair so I’m trying to figure out how to style short hair. I posted a tutorial on my blog for a side shave braid that works great on short hair (http://swoki.at/2016/07/09/side-shave-braid-side-shave-zopf/), feel free to check it out 🙂
Also, I use booster powder to give my braids more volume, it works great!
I often see people with this hairstyle and it always looks so complicated. You make it sound so easy!

Hi Robyn,
I made a similar comment to yours last week. While my hair is on the long side, it is definitely not thick. So, I understand where you are coming from in regards to the posts. I want to see someone with fine (and ever shorter hair) try this. I envy people with long, thick hair! 🙂
