Hi, friends! You know I love changing up our living spaces, right? Today I’m excited to team up with Dutch Boy Paint to share a quick and colorful update that we did in our bedroom.
It’s amazing how much color can change the mood of a room, even with just one colorful wall!
Watch our video of the before/after process of this colorful update.
My point of inspiration for this update was this beautiful quilt. I love the colors and the painterly pattern.
The only problem was, with all these gorgeous colors in the quilt, what color should I paint the wall? Almost any color would match. So many choices!
We used Photoshop to make a rough visualization of how the room would look in different colors! The first photo is the before. The paint colors that we considered (but didn’t choose) are Bittersweet and Sour, Submarine, Medieval Blue, Girl Talk, and Brilliant Impression.
Ultimately we chose East Bay, because it’s a color both Jeremy and I love, and it really fits our personalities and style. And I have to admit that while I’m a fan of of the classic, metal paint cans, it’s hard not to love the convenience and ease of the Dutch Boy paint containers. Having a twist-off top and a grip on the side made opening, closing, and pouring the paint SUPER simple.
The result is a fresh, new space that feels comfortable.
The best part about this update was the time it took to complete, just two afternoons! Painting just one wall, rather than an entire room, is a great way to change up your space without an intense time commitment. For those of you who, like me, LOVE change, it’s a great solution.
Thanks so much for taking a peek at our bedroom update! xx- Elsie

I love the pop of paint! Where is your bedframe from? Or did you make it?
I love the adhesive foam idea! I’ll have to remember that for the future. 🙂
I love that quilt! I’m a actually in love with the dark teal that your wall appears to be in some of the final photos. Is there a name for that one or is it the same color as the video? It so much darker and richer and I would love to know the name of the one in those photos. Or is it darker because of lighting or photoshop?
I have this color all over my living room walls and I love it! Such a fresh, fun pop of color.
Okay feeling super inspired after this post! 🙂

I’m painting this week and seeing how the mood of the room changed with each of the colors you were experimenting with made me so excited about my switch!

The new site design is cute but i really miss the continuous scrolling aspect of the last design! when each post brings me to a separate page to read the whole thing, I am less likely to go back to the original page and continue reading. I have noticed this with other sites in the past and sometimes its the only thing that keeps me from reading all the posts on a blog! I just thought you guys might potentially want that kind of input so I thought I would share 🙂 keep up the awesome work!
Where did you get your bed frame?
I LOVE this color. Just gorgeous. Both vibrant and relaxing. Like a tropical getaway in your own home.
I love the color! I love the foam letters to give something extra to the wall behind the bed when you do not have a headboard! As a renter, do you think the foam sheets would come off of the wall easily with out ruining the paint when it is time to move?
I love the color! What did you make the LOVE on the wall out of? I do not have a headboard and that looks like a great alternative to add a little something visually over the bed!
Elsie, you don’t have a headboard. Isn’t it tricky to, you know, not hit your head with the giant iron bar I see behind the cushions?
this looks pretty great. we have one of the room and board parsons bed frames, the lower ones not the canopy, and it’s pretty hard to figure out how to feminize it. ha.
Such a gorgeous color! I adore it! I really am loving that chartreuse color that was one of the options. All these beautiful colors make me so excited to OWN my home so I can finally paint a room a fun color and paint polka dots in my bathroom.

Hi Kerrie,
YES! We’re dying!!!

Hey Ashley,
I actually painted over it last year when we finished photographing our home book. I was just ready to change things up at the time. I do miss it, though! A little.

I’m in love with this quilt! And what a genius idea to test the colors out on photoshop! Gone are the days of taping paint samples to the wall, huh?
LOVE that color, definately the best choice. I’ve never really thought of just painting one wall, great idea. And OMG Dolly is just the cutest, you can tell she’s a big fan of the quilt 🙂
I love the idea of just doing one wall in a fabulous color like this. Looks great with the bedspread!
I did that!
Haha I love ideas on blogs, but it’s so difficult for me to sit down and do them.
I feel like a champion having already done this. 🙂
My bedroom is white with one wall a very similar color to that blue/teal you chose! My room is tiny though, so I decorated only in shades of that color, because all the other things in my room make it busy.
Looks beautiful, wot.
Ooh…and where are the fab side tables from?!
Nice inspiration.

That color is stunning, we had that in our old home and it was perfect. I’m more of a grey type of girl for home decor, right now I’m really into grey, white and yellow… but I’m sure it will change soon. 🙂 I definitely would’ve chosen yellow 🙂
Never mind! I see the link to the quilt! ;)) oops! It’s so gorgeous!
This is so beautiful!! And the “LOVE” is just the perfect pop!! So cute!
Love the video! Super cute! Love everything about the room, from the color of the wall to the plants in mason jars! Too cute!! Where is the quilt from?!?
Love it!!!
Love the lime green one!

I am sure ya’ll will get to it all 😉
The color is gorgeous. Love the change! xx

I love it, it’s really pretty!
Very nice! I’m doing something similar with an office space (one bright wall, everything else white). Exciting to see it executed in a bedroom setting.
photoshop. GENUIS! great idea. I want to try that. thanks for sharing, elsie!

Love the room, you styled it well! I am looking for wall art ideas for my room right now so you have inspired me for sure.
Oh my goodness- this is the exact color of my bedroom walls at the moment! #twins 😉
My sister and I based the color of a nail polish we really loved. lol. But I’ve actually been thinking of changing the color for a while now- being as it’s been about 3-4 years with the color and I’m ready to move on. Maybe to some pretty pastel?
Love the “love” sign btw!
I’m so excited to finally realize that we’re city neighbors! I’ve been reading your blog ever since the weaving posts got me hooked & am daily impressed with your abundance of variety & visually inspiring posts – you guys have an amazing blog!! I live in Branson & was ecstatic to learn how close we live to each other! Kind of like when I learned Brad Pitt is from Springfield, too. Our paths will probably never cross but it’s still neat.
I teach high school art & I plan on doing a weaving unit this semester, using your weaving tutorials as a jumping off point. It’s fun to find such a modern, fresh approach to a craft that can easily look really outdated.
I love your new blog design! So fresh, clean and modern.
Bombshell approved!

What a great idea to paint one wall just to switch it up! And the photoshop idea is great too, the yellow looks surprisingly nice! 🙂

Beautifully done! The bedroom, the video – all of it!
P.S. How excited are you to see photos of your second book in your reader’s hands FLOODING your IG feed tomorrow? I know I’m pretty excited. 😉
Beautiful vibrant color choice! And I love it as an accent wall with white on the adjacent ones.
Lovely room! Your duvet cover is so lovely and vibrant too! Abi 🙂 myw0rldmyview.blogspot.co.uk
Love the colour but I don’t know how you ever painted over your previous wall.. it was so unique!
I absolutely adore this wall color! It is VERY bold, but I think it’s absolutely paid off. A year ago I painted my living room walls a grey-ish purple and couldn’t be happier with it. So much fun!

Using photoshop is a great a idea! I’ll have it in mind next time I need to repaint a room 🙂
I love the final result, as always it looks wonderful!

How were you able to paint over that gorgeous hand lettered wall?! The room looks amazing but I definitely would have had a hard time covering that up! But it’s definitely a lovely update!
Love that color! I just painted my kitchen with Dutch Boy’s “Lemon Trees” and I totally agree with you on the lid! So easy to use!
I am in love with the color! It’s one of my favorites. 🙂
I love your new bedroom.
It is simply perfect!
Perfect colours and nice mixtures!

Hi Kerrie,
Me too! It was a tough choice. Maybe next time!

Hi Nicki!
Yes, the wall sign is made with self adhesive foam dots (I explain it in the video). Our light fixture is from West Elm!

Thank you so much Irene!

I love the color and the bed frame is awesome. Fun.
The color is awesome and I love the bed frame. Fun.
What a pretty and bold color! I can’t believe only one wall got painted, it’s so bright it seems like you did the whole room (but not as overpowering, of course).
That quilt indeed is a great source of inspiration..love the color, it totally changes up the room..and the video, ending with dogs on the bed, cute!!

Absolutely adore this. I will definitely be copying 🙂
I´d love to give my bedroom a pop of color, but I´m not going to stay in here forever and would have to paint white back on before moving out. So, I´m having colorful furniture instead.
I really like the pop of colour! How fun!
Hope you have a beautiful day!

Oh man, I love the teal, but I am seriously attracted to the pink for some reason! With that quilt…swoon! So weird since I would never ever think to put pink on my walls. But it looks totally modern and grown up in the photoshopped pic.
Ultimately, I probably would have gone with teal too. 🙂
My bedroom is a very similar color, Behr’s ‘Heron’. I love it. Your makeover is gorgeous!
Really cute colour. How did you make the wall sign (did you make the light fitting as well because they compliment each other perfectly?)
love how you potted that plant.
Love this color and quilt!! Good job guys!
I love the color you picked! It looks absolutely lovely 🙂
I can’t believe as a graphic designer I never thought to photoshop a room color! Brilliant decorating tip
That bedspread is gorgeous!! You should definitely make more videos- I loved this one. xoxo
