As I’ve been prepping the nursery for our son’s arrival this early summer, one project I had on my list was to make a DIY felt flower mobile. I wanted something whimsical that would go with some of the colors of his wallpaper. Plus, projects made with felt are just fun to work on. They always feel so low pressure to me (probably because they are fairly inexpensive), so I feel OK to make a few mistakes. Ha.
Here you can see the mobile alongside the wallpaper. I haven’t quite got around to hanging it above the crib, as I’m still making sure I’m happy with the placement of the furniture, but I’ll share more photos once I have the whole room put together (soon!).
Anyway, I loved how this DIY felt flower mobile turned out. I think this could be a cute project for all sorts of spaces, not just a nursery. I had seen a photo of something similar on Pinterest here, and I tried finding the original source (hoping for a tutorial), but I didn’t have any luck finding it. If anyone knows the original source, please let me know in the comments below! But since I couldn’t find it, I just made up my own tutorial which I’ll share.
Supplies:
–embroidery hoop or small wire wreath frame
–green felt (and whatever colors you want the flowers to be)
–embroidery floss
–embroidery needle
-fabric scissors (here’s a link to my gold pair)
–bias tape
-glue
I used a few different shades of yellow, orange, red, and cream for the florals on my mobile. I was a little worried it might turn out looking like candy corn, so that’s why I used a variety of shades and steered away from primary colors. But, changing up those felt colors can give this DIY felt flower mobile soooooo many different looks for different spaces.
Step One: For the flowers, I cut the felt sheets into strips.
Step Two: Then, I used embroidery thread to sew them together into loops. Be sure to leave plenty of extra thread for hanging these different lengths on the mobile.
Step Three: Cut out leaves from the green felt, pinch the ends, and sew two together. You can use these to tie around the hoop or have hanging inside the mobile.
Step Four: Cover the hoop with the bias tape. Add embroidery thread to the center, in a criss-cross pattern. Then, hang the flowers and any hanging leaves on the mobile. I found it was easier to work on this with the mobile hanging, that way I could see how much the pieces hung down and covered each other. I just added one nail to a doorway so I could hang this at a comfortable height to work on (a command strip hook would also work).
Here is a view from the top of the mobile so you can get a better idea of the process. Once you have all the pieces hung as you like, trim off any excess embroidery thread.
That’s it! It’s really very simple, and on the inside it’s quite messy. There are tons of other tutorials out there for making more intricate felt flowers, so thanks for letting me share my little project with you all. 🙂 -Emma

This is probably my favorite craft you’ve shared, Emma! I have no kiddos to make this for but I would wholeheartedly just hang this as personal decor! It’s amazing!
Emma, congratulations on your pregnancy, I hope you’re feeling well!
This is really beautiful and I love how it could be used so many different ways. This would also be really fun for a spring or summer party. Thank you!
This is absolutely gorgeous and lavish in appearance! Thank you so much for sharing the tutorial!
So cute! I especially love that this isn’t baby-centric and can really work for anyone.
This is absolutely adorable! That it’s so simple to make is also a serious bonus – I think I might have to make one for my home office to brighten things up. I can completely imagine this with purple flowers for a wisteria-type effect.
This is gorgeous and I love it!!1
Dear Emma, what an amazing diy…so beautiful!! This is going to be the most beautiful and cozy nursery!! All the best! and in case you didn’t notice…you outdid all your previews diy…which were already all great…just so you know! 😉
Emma! This is so fun and super sweet. I love it. I don’t think I’ve commented since learning of your pregnancy, so congratulations! Such an exciting time!
Tip: If I were planning a nursery, I would hang the mobile over the changing table, not the crib. To be fair, that’s based on my kids’ personalities and how I realized (too late) that would have been more helpful to me as a mom. Just thought I’d throw that out there- maybe you’ll end up moving it or maybe you’ll make another.
Oh! That makes sense. I hung it yesterday but it’s easy enough to add one more hook to the ceiling. 🙂 Great tip.
It’s beautiful! I had a similar felt foliage mobile from Etsy and I got an inexpensive musical mobile motor from Amazon that was really easy to hang. Would totally recommend!
