Fan Girls: Breaking Bad Cocktail

Breaking Bad fan cocktail ( via )Emma and I thought it would be fun to start a new once-in-a-while feature that allows us to publicly geek out over all our guilty pleasures. First up, Breaking Bad. I feel I should first confess that I'm a new-ish fan of the show. Last month Jeremy and I started marathoning it, and we became completely obsessed. Since the series finale is coming up this Sunday, I figured now was the perfect moment to immortalize my current obsession… with a cocktail recipe, of course!Breaking Bad fan cocktail ( via ) Breaking Bad fan cocktail ( via ) Breaking Bad fan cocktail ( via ) Blue Crystal Cocktail, serves one

Blue (mixed berry) kool-aid
Club soda
Blue rock candy

Syrup: To make the blue syrup, combine 1 cup sugar, 1/2 cup water and 1 teaspoon Kool-Aid in a pan. Stir over medium heat until the sugar has completely dissolved.

Cocktail: In a medium size glass with ice, add 1.5 ounces vodka, 1.5 ounces syrup (or to taste), 4-6 ounces club soda. Then, stir it up and squeeze the juice of one lime. Add a rock candy stick for garnish.

Now you know my secret recipe (JK, it's basically just a berry flavored vodka and sprite :D)Breaking Bad fan cocktail ( via ) Anyone else a Breaking Bad fan? I can't wait to make these on Sunday to watch the finale with pals! xoxo. Elsie

  • Absolutely! Been a big fan of the show since day one!! We are even planning to host a BB finale dinner with some friends. We’re going all out with Los Pollos Hermanos fried chicken baskets, cocktails, candy, snacks, etc… all homemade and based on the show and its characters. It’s going to be epic!

  • this is so awesome. definitely makes me wish i had some blue rock candy for sunday! can’t believe it’s the last episode but so excited at the same time!

also think this is a cool idea for a regular feature. 🙂

  • P.S. Don’t forget to add the club soda to your cocktail! May taste a little strong, not like that ever stops me. ;P

  • Are you kidding me?????? Seriously???? The show has been on for five years! Please do not refer to yourself as a Fan girl! Watching all the episodes in one month doesn’t make you a fan, it just makes you late for the breaking bad train. Also…this drink looks disgusting. Now I realize that you will not allow this comment to be posted on your blog because you can’t handle criticism in any real way and only want people to praise you but this is just insulting. Anyone else a breaking bad fan??? You have to be kidding with that question. The show just won the Emmy for best drama. It is only of the highest rated shows and is considered one of the best written shows in TV history.

  • HILARIOUS! I love this, but am so sad the series ending! Will definitely be trying out this recipe for the finale! Thank you for sharing!

  • I’ve pretty much watched all of the seasons since the beginning (or well March 2011) and I’ve been EXTREMELY obsessed ever since. So obsessed that I’m making my own Breaking Bad inspired groom’s cake for mine and David’s 2015 summer wedding with the RV, Jesse, Walter, methlamine barrels, Los Pollos, etc.

So excited that you made up this cocktail because I so could use one on Sunday (or not since I’m pregnant!) because I’m going to be SO sad when its gone.

  • I´ve just started watching the show with my boyfriend too, love it so far! and the drink looks really fun! You are so creative xxx

  • Oh how fun! Can’t wait to see other guilty pleasure recipes. Such clever people. Totally LOVE your blog 🙂

  • I am in love with Breaking Bad. I just do not know how they are going to end it. It cannot end well. At least, I do not think so. I am worried it is going to “break” my heart.

I do notmknow ifmI can post a link to someone else’s blog here. But Casey from Veggies and Glitter has been having weekly Breaking Bad parties. How awesome is that? Here is a link to her post about the cool things she has been doing formher screenings:

You girls are awesome! I always have to google what happened before I can watch the episode. I do not want or like to be surprised with this show (which I would have been after what happened last week. Wow!).

  • My husband and I also started watching the show, from the beginning, about a month ago and have been doing marathon viewings to try and catch up. I think we will definitely concoct one (or more) of these during a session!

  • I think you missed a few steps there, Elsie 😉 Might be a little hard to drink a half sugar syrup/half vodka cocktail. Also, how do you make the swizzle stick? Looks delicious!

  • Wow, Mary with the faux outrage. Tried to watch the show and found it to be too heavy for my taste, especially living here in the meth capitol of the world, I quickly lost interest. A lab exploded up the street from me last summer. Love the cocktail, a DIY on easy shake and bake meth recipe might draw some traffic. I kid. Love you girls.

  • Can’t anyone be a fan of something just because she didn’t follow it from the begining? Does that mean that if I start to watch Star Trek now(just an example) – wich was on air when I was very little- I cannot like it? and if I like it, I should not be consider a fan? As for the drink, we’ll have to try it to see how it tastes… I think we can give a different point of view and be polite and respectful at the same time. By the way I started to watch the show last week and I’m totally into it (OMG!)

  • Hi Elsie,
I think you missed the step to add the soda! Otherwise it’s just vodka and syrup! Hic!

  • This seems so delicious ! I love Breaking Bad, it’s the best series ever ! I think I will make this drink to watch the final episode !

  • Lol. Every time I think the hipster joke is beyond dead, someone comes out with another “I did this before you and therefore am better” comment. Also, someone tell Arrested Development Emmys = ubiquity. But don’t worry. You won’t look disproportionately angry/weird, because A Beautiful Mess would never approve your comment.

I also started Breaking Bad this year and totally binged out on it. Obsessed! This cocktail looks hilarious and fun! Love it!

  • Hi Elsie!
I love the blog but am missing the frequency of craft DIY posts lately, there are a lot of recipes and cocktails and the ‘At Home With’ type post but the crafts seem to be less often. I guess my question is are you changing the focus of your blog more towards entertainment/cooking and home decor? Maybe with your home decor book in the works your brand is evolving too? As a longtime reader I guess I’m just a bit jaded with cocktails and people’s white-walled homes! Sharon Wilson , Dublin Ireland XOXO

  • Hey Mary-
Sounds like you’re a way better fan than us. Sorry our cocktail offended you.

On a different note- you’d probably be surprised how many “critical” comments we publish every single day. We learn a TON from our readers. Honestly, the main reason we choose not to publish some negative comments is because it turns our comments section into one big argument- as you can see.

Thanks to everyone for the kind comments- no need to defend us! We’re good. 😀

  • THIS IS THE BEST EVER! I’m obsessed with Breaking Bad and this website! Thank you so much for connecting the two. You gals are great. Definitely will be making these this Sunday!

  • I squealed with excitement when I saw this. Brilliant. Totally making it. Happy BB finale to all!

  • I am OBSESSED with the show! I’m almost mad that it’s ending since, like you guys, got started kind of late in the game. So excited to see how it all comes to an end. Thanks for the recipe!

  • I am such a huge BB fan! I watch from here in Australia, and it isn’t as big here, so I can never find anyone to debrief with after each episode! Love the cocktail idea xx

  • This is so awesomely genius, I can’t even…AH! Cocktail party the night of the series finale!? I think so!

  • Love that! I don’t have cable so I haven’t seen this half of the season (current). It’s driving me crazy! That show is addicting 🙂 On a roadtrip back to CO from AZ I ALLLLLLMOST stopped to stalk out the houses and film sites when I drove through Abq….if I wasn’t on a schedule I would’ve gone all fangirl on that place!

  • This looks like a GREAT IDEA! You can do this with skittles too, just gather around the same color, put candy in a bottle and fill with vodka.Leave for a few days.

  • Thank you for putting such a fun spin on such a great/intense show!!
We will definitely be serving these up for our finale party on Sunday–I was looking for a quirky way to celebrate the show and this is it–plus the booze will definitely help ease the pain and anxiety of what I’m sure is going to be a horrific and traumatic conclusion! 🙂

  • elsie’s response was so eloquently and diplomatically handled that i like you guys even more. seriously well played! i’m sympathetic to bloggers and even though you make it seem like that comment rolled off, i know it can be hard not to let it ding you.

  • I’d love to know where you got those napkins. did you make them and I missed the post or did you pick them up somewhere? my sons are taking Algebra II right now and they would be fun.

  • I just started watching it on Netflix and I’m hooked! It’s one of the best shows out there. This cocktail is such a pretty color! Love your blog. Keep up the good work Elsie and Emma!

  • Ooh, I just posted photos from a Breaking Bad filming location! We looooove BB and since we live here in New Mexico, we have so much fun seeing places nearby where scenes were filmed.

  • I’m behind on the Breaking Bad craze too–I got through the first season last weekend, and I’m already well into the second. It’s great! Definitely better late than never! I LOVE this drink!! So darn clever!! I’ll mix up a Blue Crystal Cocktail before kicking off this weekend’s BB marathon!!

  • I’m not a Breaking Bad watcher, but that cocktail looks positively sinful! I may have to make one and check out the first episode, just for kicks! 🙂

  • What the Walt is up with Mary???Sounds like she’s been on the ice herself ha ha! Love your blog, big fan&absolutely delighted& thrilled to read your BB cocktail!Hubby&I did a huge marathon hit too!Bless the iPad in bed eh?Keep up the good work you two!!! Marcella! X

  • Embarrassed to say I have never seen Breaking Bad…(Mary, I’m still a good person…just a very busy one.) I have a job that keeps me burning up the road and I return home to a 4 acre farm that I grow organic produce on so I opted out from cable tv!
I used to make a blueberry schnapps and lemonade drink in the summers when my kids were young. It was delish and reminded me of this pretty drink.
Roll on gals! Love getting inspired from your creativity.

  • Wondering where you found the Reyka vodka? We went to Iceland last year & it’d be great to have some of that vodka around the house to remind us (we drank ours already!)

  • I don’t drink and I rarely ever leave comments, but this one is just too good. I’m a recent BB convert and I am so psyched for the finale. Good job on this one!

  • I am pretty sure they purchased the rock candy swizzle stick, but you can google how to make rock candy. It’s really easy, but takes a few days.

  • LOL! My friend made us blue cupcakes with blue crystal candy on top when she came over to watch on Sunday. I will have to send her this for the finale!

  • I am so happy you love Breaking Bad! My boyfriend and I also became fans later in the series, but we love the show just as much as anyone else! We are actually going to be in Hatzman suits for Halloween this year. Thank you for the cute cocktail recipe! I am definitely going to use this on Sunday along with my blue crystal cupcakes recipe! 🙂

  • It’s funny you should say that you read what happened before you watch it. I am usually like that (with Game of Thrones for example), but with Breaking Bad (which, like Elsie, I only started watching last month), I don’t want to know a thing, I *want* that surprise and tension. It’s not like me to want that but I do with this!

    Cool drink recipe! 🙂

  • Awesome! I totally started a pinterest board at work (I do social media, what??) and I have a TV inspired drinks/treats that this would be perfect for! Love it!

  • Binging in BB as I watch this post. Can’t wait to try this potion. Love this show.

  • Marvellous!! Now you need to watch “Orange is the New Black” and make a cocktail for that! I reckon you’ll love it, especially when you run out of Breaking Bads to watch and you need something to fill the hole.

  • another noob fan here! that cocktail is such a cute idea. I may have to fix myself one to sip while watching tomorrow night…hah, who am I kidding, I’ll be too glued to the tv to even register anything else in the world. lol!

  • So incredibly fun that you are into Breaking Bad. I like it and I don’t at the same time. But I can’t stop watching. We live in Albuquerque and our city is OBSESSED with this show! So EVERYONE is in a state of mourning right now because it’s about to end. One restaurants is even holding red carpet parties! And there are places around town that have Breaking Bad food items – like drinks and candy. It’s pretty fun. There’s even a tour you can take yourself on with your phone and visit all the places that were filmed in the show. You should definitely come out and do the whole Breaking Bad experience. But not drugs ok? 😉

  • i thought for sure someone would have asked about this already, but i guess i’m the big nerd here! 🙂 i love the calculus fabric– is it just the cloth or a finished product, and where did you find it?

also, this drink looks as awesome as all of your recipes. <3

  • Go ladies, kill it with kindness. I’m a new fan of a lot of shows because I didn’t have cable for a long time and I netflixed them all at once. No biggie! the cocktail looks fun!!

  • A blue “meth” cocktail? (Your description in the September recap post) Does anyone else think it’s weird to make a cocktail that’s supposed to represent a hardcore drug that kills and ruins lives?

  • This is just tickles my inner alcoholic. ♥ I’m kidding. But it’ll look so cute in a nest of white Christmas lights for a party! I might throw in some gummi bears in though.

  • I don’t think Breaking Bad is something you need to feel guilty about! It’s just pure pleasure! What outstanding writing! I watch it on Netflix, so I’m still way behind, but love the show. This cocktail is perfect!

  • That blanket/napkin thing with all the calculus on it … I need it! Where is it from? :<

  • I love your blog but I’m really disappointed with this cocktail – not a fan of glamorizing drug use.
