Another great option is this vanilla buttermilk cake, which you can make “funfetti” by adding sprinkles to the batter.
You will need buttercream frosting and food dye for most of these Halloween cupcakes designs. Or you could use store-bought frosting with food dye.
We also used royal icing for one design. And, here are many of the novelty sprinkles we used:
- Eyeball sprinkles – for mummies or monsters
- Edible knives and axes – for the murder cupcake
- Candy corn colored Jimmie sprinkles
- Bone sprinkles – part of a Halloween sprinkle set
Candy Corn Cupcakes
To make candy corn cupcakes, start by adding a line of frosting to the center. You can pipe this on or use an offset spatula. Next, fill a shallow bowl with orange sprinkles. Lightly dip the cupcake so the frosting gets filled in with orange sprinkles.
Repeat on each side with the yellow and white sprinkles, taking care not to mix the edges as best you can.

Frost the cupcake with chocolate frosting, then dip the entire top in chocolate Jimmie sprinkles. You can also add rock or bone sprinkles on top. Then, add your gravestone.
Blood Drip Cupcakes
For these bloody knife cupcakes, pipe vanilla frosting on top of each cupcake. Then, drip red royal icing on top. Add an edible knife to the red icing area.
To make mummy cupcakes, you need white frosting, eyeball sprinkles, and a petal frosting tip. If you had this set of frosting tips you could use #104 or #127 to pipe the mummy bandages on top. Then, add the eyes and you’re done!
These are for all your zombie guests to enjoy. Lol. To make brain cupcakes, you need vanilla buttercream frosting tinted pink. Frost the top of the cupcake in a thin smooth layer.
Then, use the edge of a butter knife to divide the cupcake in half. Pipe squiggle lines along both sides.
