Homemade Flavored Popcorn

Koolaid popcorn recipeFlavored popcorn was a favorite childhood treat. There was a gourmet popcorn shop near our family doctor’s office. So we would get a popcorn treat after any particularly bad doctor’s visits. I think we partially just loved all the pretty colors. 🙂

I was delighted to learn that you can make your own flavored popcorn at home, pretty easily, using another childhood favorite: Kool-aid. Oh yeah! Continuing our sugar rush from yesterday, let’s make some colorful popcorn, guys. How to make flavored popcorn with koolaidFlavored popcorn partyFlavored Popcorn, recipe adapted from here.

6 quarts popped popcorn
2 cups sugar
1 cup light corn syrup
2/3 cup butter
1 packet of Kool-aid (choose your flavor)
1 teaspoons baking soda

Pop the popcorn. Cover a few large baking sheets, or a clean counter top, with wax paper. Spray with a little non cook cooking spray.

In a large pot combine the sugar, corn syrup and butter. Cook until it begins to boil. Continue cooking for 3 minutes, stirring as you go. Remove from heat and stir in the Kool-aid. Now stir in the baking soda. This will cause the mixture to puff up (which is why you want to use a large pot, not a small one) so be careful not to burn yourself. Drizzle the mixture over the popcorn. Try to get every piece of popcorn coated with the mixture as best you can.Flavored popcornWe served this popcorn alongside the candy vanilla milkshakes. Maybe we should have added my Buttered Popcorn Cupcakes as well? Sugar overload? Definitely. But, it was fun. 🙂 xo. Emma

  • The candy milkshakes were a fabulous idea, and this was a great way to follow them up! Never thought to flavor my popcorn in a sweet way, and I’d DEFINITELY never have considered using Kool-Aid to do it! Love this idea 🙂

  • Great idea for a party. The blue popcorn doens’t really look edible though :p.

  • I like it !

  • Brilliant! I have never heard of using kool-aid to flavour, but it’s a magical idea! Colorful and delicious!

  • Just wondering if there is an alternative to Kool-aid…sadly I can’t find it in the UK

  • LOVE this idea, especially if you’re going for a specific color theme like at a baby or bridal shower.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get a non-fruity flavor on popcorn? Could you do this with a packet of ranch dressing or a dry buffalo hot wing mix? Would you still use the corn syrup?

    Experience welcome!

    Thank you!

  • I think this would be great just as a festive decoration – and for those worried about using corn syrup, you could always fiddle with the recipe & do a mixture of 3 parts sugar to 1 part water and boil together until syrupy. What a fun idea! Thanks!

  • Mmmmm flavoured popcorn!!! I want a movie night after seeing these yummy treats!!
