Pillow Talk

Pillow Talk- Kilim Pillows from Etsy Hey guys. Let’s talk about pillows!

I’m done purchasing major furniture for our new space (for now… heh) and so I’ve moved onto collecting accessories and accent pieces. I’m not gonna lie… I think I actually agonize more over the small stuff than the major pieces. Before you say, “Hey. Chill out. They’re just pillows.” Hear me out. Shopping for room accessories can feel so impersonal! I don’t want to buy a pillow that’s just OK to fill space or purchase art that works with the room but has no meaning to my family. Do you know what I’m saying? Couches don’t have to be meaningful… but pillows—they’re way cooler when they say a little something about your style. Maybe I just enjoy the obsession? If you like to obsess over details as much as I do, this is for you!

First up, Turkish Kilim Pillows. I personally love these pillows, because they remind me of my grandmother. Her home is full of ethnic prints from all over the world. I love this print in a rug, but my husband requested that I stop buying patterned rugs (I’m obsessed). So this was the next best way to bring these beautiful patterns into our space! Plus, I can envision them in multiple rooms, so I knew they were a smart purchase.

Pillow Talk- Society6Quirky illustrated pillows via Society 6 (1/2/3/4). I love the fun that these prints can bring to a serious space! Quirky prints are my favorite when mixed with structured furniture or industrial pieces. What I love most about these prints is that they can speak about your personality, infusing your space with something unexpected. Secret sauce, if you will. 🙂

Pillow Talk- Skinny LaminxI’m a fan of bold prints that look amazing from a distance. Prints like these add impact and not clutter to a space. I just ordered a few of these for Emma’s new chartreuse sofa (OK, OK… I ordered one for myself too!) The Etsy shop Skinny Laminx is where I found these beautiful, bold prints. These would be great to mix with solid color pillows or more delicate prints, like the illustrated pieces above.

Pillow Talk- Urban OutfittersEasy going pillows from Urban Outfitters. I have several of these pillows in our home. The thing I love most about Urban Outfitters home decor is the colors. They have REALLY good colors available. It’s a good spot to shop for basic colorful cushions and inexpensive trendy prints. Ikea is a good place to hunt for similar pieces. (1/2/3/4)

Pillow Talk- Proud MaryLast, but not least, I love the handmade pillow selection at Proud Mary. (1/2/3/4) The prints are simple, but special. I love the neon cording and the tassels. Sometimes it’s the little details that make a pillow special!

Well, those are my current favorites! Some I’ve already purchased for our space and some are on my wishlist. What about you. Do you have any amazing pillow shopping sources? Please share! I’m sure I can fit one more (or two, or three) into my decor plans. 🙂 xo. Elsie

  • Purchase kilim pillows on somkilimpillows, the largest collection with reasonable wholesale and retail prices. Bring vintage Turkish culture for your decor.

  • All of these pillows are very cute indeed! I prefer handmade pillows for better sleeping and decorating on sofas as well. Thanks for this wonderful pillow talk. It’s very inspiring.

  • I totally agree with you. It took me a couple of hours to pick out of sofa but I’ve been trying to narrow down the art for the last year.

  • This makes me so excited and anxious to own my own place one day. I dream of decorating, but don’t want to come off tacky!

  • I absolutely understand your pillow obsession! My favorite place to buy pillows is from marimekko. They’re originally a fabric store, so if you don’t find a print you like in pre-made pillows you can just buy the fabric and craft your own! Here’s a direct link to their pillow section:

    Good luck!

  • Love the ones from Society 6!

    xo Melanie

  • Thanks for the fab inclusion of Skinny laMinx! Much appreciated. X

  • I’m absolutely obsessed with the designs in the Cotton & Flax shop on Etsy: http://www.etsy.com/shop/cottonandflaxshop She does such great graphics! And does super heavy stitching so they’ll last. Loving those Kilim ones you picked too!

  • I love these fun prints! I’m glad you mentioned Society 6, it’s such a great site and supports independent artists.

  • Ohh I absolutely love this post!I pay a lot of attention to the little pieces in my apartment too,as I think it gives your home a unique and personal vibe.
I just purchased a great pillow at IKEA this week,is a treasure map pillow and it just made me think about Peter Pan all over again!

  • I love all these pillows. Why not get them all…or at least the covers. I like the pillow covers from Ikea, as I´m a fan of Scandinavian design, and sometimes, there are nice covers in the h&m home collection too.

  • Wonderful information as always Elsie! You should check out Pillows By Dezign. I just received my order and they are beautiful. This is the pattern I bought http://www.pillowsbydezign.com/products/Navy-Blue-and-Grey-Spotted-Throw.html

    Im in love!!!

  • Such fun pillows! I have two pillows from society 6 and we love them. My favorite artists are Teagan White and Budi Satria Kwan.

  • there really are some supercute pillows in that pile!

  • Oooowww I love the bears!! And the ship to France! Perfect! Thanks guys!

  • These cushions are so lovely, I particularly like to Society6 ones!
I’ve actually just starting making my own cushions and these provide great inspiration. I’ll post about my DIY experiences soon, please check it out xx

  • I love the quirky illustrated pillows, so cute, thanks for the share!

  • Super pretty pillows! My daughter actually makes no-sew pillows, which is pretty cool and sometimes, to change things up, I trade my living room pillows with my downstairs neighbor to change things up.

  • I am OBSESSED with Skinny LaMinx!!! I studied abroad in Cape Town last spring and had the privilege of making frequent stops at the store and even got to meet Heather. I have a few of the dishtowels and small bags and can vouch that they’re great products!

  • Love the Kilim ones! They are usually so spendy (even for just fabric if you want to diy). Your handwritten wall project was amAZEBALLS! And your food always looks so good.

  • I love the bold, colorful prints. They remind me of Erin Flett’s line…

  • Awesome pillow collection!
    Love it!

  • I have 4 Kilim pillows that i bought from ebay at really good prices. I absolytely love the prints on them and never seem to get tired of looking at the, BUT, the material is a little scratchy against the skin…so they often end up in a messy pile at one end of the sofa :/. Im trying to figure out where i can use them that they wont end up in a pile anymore.

  • These pillows are all so awesome! I love the first group of them!

  • I have a [slight] obsession with pillows so I loveeeee this post!!

My favourite is the abstract one from Society 6… and the Cote D’Ivoire one from Proud Mary… and…

OK I’m going to stop now before I get my wallet out! 😉

  • I have agonized for weeks over whether or not a certain pillow was cohesive enough to join the little family already nesting on our bed…I know how you feel! 🙂 Love the ones you posted on though…very cute!

  • These are beautiful…I’m searching for the perfect pillows for our lounge – it’s desperately in need of a burst of colour!

  • I love your recommendations! I’ve fallen in love with the ikat pattern and love the idea of including a burst of color!

    -Samantha from Blissfully Bossy

  • Thanks for this! I might be moving this summer and I can’t stop thinking about decor and I also have a thing for pillows 🙂 Great post!

  • i love funny colored pillows on a classic sofa !! It allows me to change my living room decoration without buying a new couch… love those items !

Check out my new outfit post :

  • Ohhhh, these are gorgeous. I really need to buy some pillows. And rugs. And art. And pretty much everything else you can imagine for my apartment. Definitely bookmarking this for inspiration. Oh, also, thanks for showing us sofART, I could spend all my money there. Wow!

  • I too think pillows make a huge difference! They can add so much color and fun!I really like the first set you posted.

I made my own pillows so I don’t break the bank. Plus I can change them out often! See my Decorative Pillow DIY here

  • i read this and now i’m shopping for pillows that i definitely don’t need. society 6 is the best!

  • Thanks to you, I have discovered society 6 website, love the pillows and they are quite cheap. Cheers !

  • LOVE the kilim ones! I just painted a grey and white zig zag pattern onto a pillow for a red couch!

  • I love the ones from Society 6, particularly the bears! Such a unique and special touch. I’ve always enjoyed the pillow covers from this Etsy shop (https://www.etsy.com/shop/JolieMarche?ref=shop_sugg)–the rustic French inspired look fits my aesthetic.

  • I luurve the ethnic print ones the most. Cushions and pillows are very important, I agree! Throws and pillows say more about your style than the sofa or chair itself. Plus you see them first really.

  • I, well, my mom 😉 is recovering some of my beige couch cushions with some pretty graphic wax fabric (african prints) I bought in Dakar, when I was living in Senegal. Memories + pattern and color = win win! 🙂 For some wax fabric views, click here : http://www.google.fr/search?q=imprim%C3%A9+wax&hl=fr&client=firefox-a&hs=4HI&rls=org.mozilla:fr:official&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=uZhJUe3wGIPIhAe6n4GwAQ&ved=0CDAQsAQ&biw=1280&bih=865

  • You’re so right! Without even thinking about it, I just realized pillows are a big part of my decorating sense too. I love the Turkish prints you shared…beautiful! They remind me of one I am using right now that is coincidentally from my boyfriend’s grandma’s house. I guess grandmas have good taste. 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

  • I love the one with the cats! I posted that on my blog a while ago, and I love everything from that collection. 🙂

I love your picks! Although my fave are from Society6. 🙂

  • my boyfriend and I got one of those turkish kilim pillows at the brooklyn flea market in Jan – it is awesome and massive! The skinny laminx ones are great too, especially the first one! happy pillow shopping!

  • Pillow shopping is totally addictive. Round here Zara Home and Habitat can have some really nice pillows.

    xx Kaisa

  • OMG! I am obsessed with the cat print pillow! I have a dress in that print that I got from Anthropologie! Love it!

Also, I wanted to thank you both for creating such amazing posts. You both have inspired me to let me creativity flow and as a result I’ve finally restarted my little blog. Thanks for the inspiration!

  • Great pillows! Want the first ones!

  • Got my favorites picked out. Mahalo for posting!

  • So many pillows with perfect colors.. I like it. Great decoration.

  • I have terrible will power. You should not have showed me these. They are super cute. Want the all.

  • I am thinking about changing the pillows of the sofa
    Love your options

  • 4. I LOVE #4! And I’m in the same place right now. Accessory picking is driving me up the wall haha

  • Have you seen the pillows from Indigi Designs yet? They are so beautiful, very modern with a South African twist. I think you would like them! And you are so right, it’s all about the decor…

  • Sorry, didnt know where to ask this question: the homemade peanut butter jar – would you mind telling me the font you used for the word ‘Butter’? any help, greatly appreciated.

  • The Society 6 pillow collection is my favorite. I love the fun prints – they’re so youthful.

  • Thanks for introducing me to Proud Mary! So hard to choose 🙂

  • I’m glad I’m not the only one who agonizes over details. It took me almost 6 months to purchase a single pillow for our couch!

Eatdrinkchic is a wonderful Australian girl who loves a good pillows just like all of us here. She has definitely got the design eye for sifting through Australian and online stores.

  • I know what you mean – buying accessories can feel so artificial.
My plan is to hand make my own pillows.
That way, I can tailor them to suit my space, and change them up with a little DIY (without breaking the bank).

  • Love all of these!! I’ve found a lot of beautiful colorful southeast asia inspired pillows at World Market, they remind me of Bali and Thailand. Not sure if you have them in Missouri, but they’re one of my favorite big home stores!

  • The first two sets- from Society 6 and the kilim prints? My house needs them!

  • I feel like most of these sort of look the same, but the first ones really stand out to me! I’m also obsessed with pillows, but instead of buying a bunch of new ones, I bought pillow covers for my old ones off of etsy! <3

  • So many cute cushions! I know what you mean about how personal the decorating touches are in an area though. I’m actually making my own cushions at the moment, black and white check pattern with yellow piping, but I’m in love with some of the ones you’ve shared today!

  • All of my pillows are from Target (clearanced) and Ross, so I’m no help there. I was wondering, do yours end up on the floor or a side chair or basket? Mine only actually sit on the couch and love seat 1% of the time!

  • So check out these pillows I saw on Pinterest. I LOVE the fabric on the black one…but it is a bit pricey or I’d make one myself (maybe I still will). That deer fabric (by Echino, I think) comes in other colors, too, like turquoise and fuschia. I thought you might like it.

  • well, i love that yellow print pillow.. The big pillow with the full of colors, is gonna be awesome too! :)http://lovesimplegreen.blogspot.com/

  • I like the second set of pillows the best. They are the kind of pillows I’d be seriously jealous of if I saw them in someone’s house. I think they would also match the fun and artsy patterns found in other places around your house. They are just so different and eye-catching! 😀

  • I loved every one of those pillows! I have a hard time picking ones out since I like the pattern to be on both sides of the pillow and most places don’t do that.

  • I love the ones from Society 6! They would have to be my favourites.

  • Ahhh so many pretty prints everywhere. I just want to live in a giant pillow fort.

  • Me encantan los cojines, creo que tengo de que todos los colores para cada temporada o estado de ánimo.

  • They are so cute!!
I love the first set in particulr.. I bought something similar at Urban Outfitter a few months ago!! 😉

  • I too have an obsession with pillows..you’re absolutely right, its all in the details! I often just buy pillow covers/slipcovers, so that I can rotate patterns when I need a quick pick me up or change:)

  • I haven’t even bought a couch yet for our home, but when the time comes for pillows I am planning on making them. We have a great fabric shop near us that has all sorts of designs from Michael Miller, Melody Miller, and the like.

  • i’m actually in the market for some new pillows for my bed and all these are perfect. i love the bold colors and since my covers are white, they’d be perfect!

    lauren @ in between idols.

  • The bold etsy pillow are my favorite!

I’m currently obsessed with the linen pillows from Restoration Hardware. They age so gracefully. We lounged on ours for a year or so and they only looked better, so we bought more! It seems like they come out with a new pattern every few months, so they’re always on clearance…haha

I’m also in love with John Robshaw….but those get pricey. I splurged on one for my bedroom, and am majorly coveting more now.

There are also some really cute grey and white striped cotton ones at IKEA right now. They look great and blend in with my other “higher end” purchase. Love!

I believe I just wrote a love letter to pillows. Forgive me.

  • I love that first set of pillows! I’m trying to spring-ify my room. My walls are teal and my bedspread is a crisp white, so I’d like some more pops of color to ring in a new season! Thanks for the ideas. 🙂

  • ah, so fun. You are givign so many color decorating ideas!! Love these pillows 🙂

  • Ohhh, those Skinny laMinx ones are to die for!!

I make my own pillows. I get IKEA fabric or buy fabric online and then sew them and stuff them. It’s easy and fun.

  • I love pillows:) and this selection is great!

  • I am totally obsessed with pillows! To be honest, it started with Zara Home and now I can’t stop pinning and googling pillows! Wonderful post! I love it 100%!

  • Such lovely prints and designs! I love pillows!

  • I’m in love with the cat face pillow!!

    xo Jennifer

  • I am totally obsessed the very first #4. I am also just realizing that we need pillows. Coincidence? Haha.

  • So many pillows!! Love the bold prints from the etsy shop. What a great find!

  • The pillows make a huge difference! I’m re-covering a chair in a grey pattern, but want to make sure the pillow that sits on it will add some color!

These are all super cute finds.

  • OMG thank you for introducing me to society 6! I’m a sucker for whimsy and can’t wait to order a few of these.
