Progress Report: Guest Room Wallpaper

Oh hey yellowI’m really excited to share today’s progress report with you! It’s a BIG one.

But first, you know I love to take a stroll down memory lane… This room started out like this–

6a00d8358081ff69e201b7c7f73c1e970b-piA few months after we moved in, it looked like this. A big improvement, yes, but it was still lacking something.

And I finally decided to fully commit and wallpaper all four walls to make it feel both more cozy and more exciting.

Wallpaper makes such a HUGE difference in a space, it feels like cheating. Seriously, minimalists should get into wallpaper because after it goes up, you don’t need to do much more and the room is done.

All-white rooms are the complete opposite. I love them too (obviously), but they take a lot more planning and careful styling to make them feel balanced… not too bare, not too cluttered… ugh! So hard to get right!

A pattern-filled wallpapered room on the other hand, covers a multitude of sins.

Wallpaper install dayHere’s a photo from install day!! It’s so exciting going from point a to point b all in one day.

(By the way, if you live in the Nashville area and need an awesome husband and wife wallpaper team to hire, email me, and I’ll give you their info! elsie AT abeautifulmess DOT com)

Yellow wallpaper by Hygge & WestLet’s talk about this specific paper! It’s from Hygge & West designed by Justina Blakeney.

I’m obsessed with it!! OBSESSED.

And to be honest, even though it’s really photogenic – the photos don’t do it justice! You really have to be in the room in real life to feel the VIBES.

So now it’s pretty close to done. Next up, we’ll be adding curtains, swapping the headboard for something more special, and adding just a couple details to cozy it up. I hope our guests will feel like they’re on vacation in this room!

This really was a game changer for this room. I’ll be sharing this tour later this year. We’re at that point in our renovation where it’s starting to come together quickly and feel really satisfying!

What do you think about the new wallpaper?? xx. Elsie

  • Wow! At first I wasn’t so sure about this but seeing the room put together with the bed and desk has totally changed my mind. You couldn’t help waking up happy every day 🙂

  • O to the M to the G! Love it! So cute that your dress matches. 🙂

  • LOVE this!!! I think this color/pattern is my favorite of the ones Justina designed.

  • I honestly can’t wait to get a place of my own just for this very reason! Wallpaper makes such a difference, and I love this pattern and colour. It’s so vibrant and brightens up the room so much! How exciting 🙂

  • Wow! I’m in love with this wallpaper! Beautiful way to make a dull room into a bright and bold one!

  • Wow – that wall paper probably wouldn’t have caught my eye but it looks gorgeous – so bright and fresh. I wouldn’t fancy hanging it myself though – I had enough trouble with lining paper and I didn’t have to worry about pattern matching with that!

  • Hi,
    Amazing Post! I Love it.
    Thanks for sharing it.

  • Love it! So fun. But what size bed it that? My guest room has a similar layout and I’m struggling!

  • I love it! There’s so much personality in the space. It’s poppin’!

  • You can have them custom cut for you at places like Home Depot. 🙂

  • Haha! Thank you Molly.
I understand where you are coming from! 🙂

  • Spoonflower’s wallpaper is fully removable (that’s what I have in my dining room). I also like Chasing Paper.

  • The yellow is great! So bright and happy! How do you get your roller shades to fit so perfectly tight? I put one in my daughter’s room but there are small gaps on either side, and it drives me crazy.

  • This is a crazy transformation already! Can’t wait to see it once you’re done!

  • The print of that paper is gorgeous! I’m obsessed!

  • I LOVE it! So bright and cheery! I’m scared to go the wallpaper route because I’m CONSTANTLY changing things around in my house — is a room ever “finished”? HAH!

My Friend Alex (a local Nashville artist) has a Life Aquatic print I think would look great in there! (since you love Wes Anderson 😉

  • I live vicariously through your bold and beautiful ideas. I am so much of a neutral person that you make me think outside of my comfort zone and I love it! I love this wallpaper and I never would have tried it but it is amazing.

  • Wow I love the wallpaper! It makes the room look so bright and homely!

  • You did an amazing job on your guest room! Cant wait to see more!

  • Wow! Such a dramatic before and after! It looks so beautiful and cheerful! 🙂

  • So cheerful and calming at the same time. Your guests are goung to love it!

  • Yellow is not my colour but your room looks soooooooooooooo great!!! Congrats!

  • looks like such a happy room for your guests! love the fun yellow =o)

  • Amazing very bold idea, the sense that gives a person shine at the moment

  • Ohhh, I’m loving this! I’ll have to keep this in mind when I buy my first house…whenever that may be!

  • Ahhh I love the yellow! Its so bright!

  • I used to have a massive aversion to bold wallpaper, but after a few years of living in the UK, it’s really starting to grow on me! I can’t wait to buy a property instead of rent, so that I can put my own bold touches on it!

  • Feels like a splash of sunshine! Gorgeous =) ~Juju Sprinkles

  • Loooooooooooooooove it! I was thinking about getting this paper in the pink and green colorway but this yellow is AMAZING!

  • It’s so bold, I love it! Very sunny and bright! I’ve been eyeing a ghost chair like that for my own desk, so it’s also nice to see it in a similar function…

  • This is amazing!!! I swore I’d never do wallpaper after removing soooo much of it from our current house (this stuff was everywhere, even on the ceilings in the closets!) The bright, cheery vibe here could seriously make me reconsider that. It adds so much character! I think it’s perfect for a guest room too, as kind of its own little oasis.

  • Woooooow I am impressed!! Love it s much! It’s very cheerful and funny at the same time. I won’t mind to spend some days there! Great job!!

  • BEAUTIFUL! The room feels so bright and lively now, but not overbearing at all. On a side note, I would love to see some of your resources for temporary wallpaper. This one probably isn’t, but I think I remember you using them in the past.

    Thanks for being so awesome!

  • I TOTALLY love this. I think it would be great as a accent wall if i had a space for it!! seriously i don’t particularly care for wallpaper, but this is unbelievable!

  • alright, I might have to finally join the wallpaper club! We just bought a house and had to remove SO MUCH old, ugly wallpaper so I’ve been avoiding it at all costs but… THIS… I love.
