Sister Style: Bright Lights

Emma A Beautiful Mess Emma A Beautiful Mess Emma Chapman at home Emma of A Beautiful MessLately the weather has dictated that if you plan to venture outside anytime between the hours of 10am and 6pm, then you MUST wear a sleeveless dress. Bonus point if it will easily hide back sweat because no matter how good your car AC is, you will be sticking to the seat by the time you arrive, no matter how far you drive. But, despite the humidity and heat, I truly love living in the Ozarks – it’s just a really special place.

Also, raise your hand if you like polka dots? Yeah, me too. So even if I’ve worn this dress probably one too many times lately, so what – everybody loves polka dots anyway. So it all works out.

Some random facts from my life lately:
Nail update: still not biting them. Woot! Sometimes it’s still a struggle, but I feel I can confidently say I am in recovery. 🙂
-Currently loving Raury. Have you heard his music yet?
-Really excited to see the new Star Trek. I love blockbusters, but I am an especially big fan of sci-fi geared blockbusters, and I loved Star Trek growing up!
-Getting back into my love of library. I hadn’t been in well over 6 months, which is such a shame, but I’m back in the club now and so happy to be. 🙂
-If you’ve never checked out Julie Blackmon’s photography, you NEED to. She’s from my town (or I’m from hers?), and I’m currently obsessed with her work – so interesting and inspiring.
-Trying to decide if I should have a garage sale next month or not. It’s so much work, but we have quite a few things that I hate to donate because they are nice. Hmm…

You got any random facts you’d like to share, Sister?

Elsie LarsonElsie LarsonHey there. Yes – it’s still both super hot and super rainy here in Nashville. People who have lived here a long time keep saying this rain is uncommon. It’s pretty most of the time, like when we’re hanging out in our sunroom. Not so much when I’m driving on the highways though. :/

Some random updates from my life lately:
-I have puppy fever. Probably not going to act on that, but still…
-Our house is so much closer to complete now. Getting real cozy over here!
-I am so excited because we found ONE species of prickly pear cactus that can live outdoors through the winter here in Tennessee. Thinking we’re going to plant some of them in the back of our house and peonies in the front?
-Been trying some long dresses (as you can see here). I still feel more comfortable in short dresses, but these are fun! Trying to branch out.
-Half of me is super excited for autumn and the holidays (approaching even sooner from a blog-planning perspective than a real-life perspective), and the other half of me wants to burn down Hobby Lobby for having ALL the Christmas decor out in August. Yikes!

And since I know some of you will ask, my planter (on a stand) is from West Elm, the geometric one is from CB2, my sofa is from Article and my smoke bomb print is from A House In The Hills. I’ll be sharing a full tour of this room this fall! :))

  • Emma, i used to bite my nails from when i was little until about 5 or 6 years ago. i tried EVERYTHING and the ONE thing that helped me was watching an episode of “the monsters inside me” (or something like that) it was about some lady that got a parasite from biting her nails!! after that i got anxiety about getting a parasite, ahahaha. anxiety sucks and I eventually overcame it but I have NO urge to bite my nails!! and i haven’t in years!
so next time you think of biting your nails just think about parasites! haha

  • Feeling that puppy fever HARD over here too! More specifically, french bulldog puppy fever!

Love both of these looks, and agree on being excited for Autumn. ALSO agree on it being wayyyy early for the Christmas stuff to be everywhere. Like, we have two more major holidays to get through. Let’s give them their due! Haha!

  • Hi Heidi!
I shop all over. The best inexpensive spot for sunnies is Zero UV and ASOS. I also love Karen Walker and Wildfox sunnies. 🙂

  • This question is sort of unrelated to this entire post, but I had a question for Elsie. I have many of the same facial features as you, so I’m super interested in where you purchase your eyeglasses. I’ve never owned a pair of contacts, so my glasses are my main accessory. I love them! I’m very into retro/unique styles and colors, but I’ve hit a rut on where to purchase them. Thoughts?

    Thanks!

    Heidi

  • Hi Kye,
As far as I know you can only grow the texas prickly pear outside here in Tennessee, so nope. This one is indoors :))
    xx- Elsie

  • this much rain really is uncommon. that cactus behind you is huge! is that the type that can live outside? i’ve seen a lot of them around mailboxes.

  • emma! your dress reminds me of that one colorful brick wall in Palm Springs.
    I LOVE IT!!!!

elsie, if you carried the rain with you to Nashville, i think all of us Californians are willing to pay you to bring some of it out here.
    lets talk about it!

    lol

  • Oh yes, I believe in thrift Karma. I ALWAYS find amazing things after I let go of the things I don’t need

  • Sleeveless top as a vest? I LOVE IT

I dont have a denim/chambray top but I have a LOT of colorful tops just like this that would look rad over a plain dress 🙂

  • I say donate nice things, the universe will bring your good deed back to you. I promise. 🙂

  • Thank you Jen!! I am so excited! :)) Just waiting on a backordered coffee table and it will be complete!!! 🙂
    xx- Elsie

  • I LOVE it. It’s definitely super comfy. The only note I would have is that they are big, so make sure and measure well and check the measurements on their site to make sure it’s a good fit for your space! :))
    xx- Elsie

  • We must be soul sisters…..I have so much in common with your life updates. I went back to chewing my nails and I hate it. I am totally into long dresses right now and wanting more and more. I always feel a little sad when I go too long without visiting the library. AND I am wearing polka dots today! Wow!!

  • Oh yes, Stranger Things is awesome!!! We too binged watched it like crazy people!

  • I love your outfit Emma, did you get some silvery/grey added to the end of your ombre? I recently switched up my icy blonde to a toned silver and I’m loving the change for summer. It looks great on you 🙂
