Spring Dress Line: Q&A

wowzers… I can't believe the spring collection launches in just a few days. we've been getting loads of repeat questions around here, so i thought a quick Q&A post might be in order.

Q: Are you going to ship internationally?

A: Of course! At Red Velvet we always ship worldwide. If you live outside of the US and haven't purchased from our new site yet, you'll be pleasantly surprised with the reasonable rates. We worked really hard to develop new shipping profiles this season. We also offer free shipping anywhere in the world for all orders over $200.

Q: What time will the dresses be online?

A: We are going to start listing them at 6:00 PM CST on March 1st. All of the dresses (plus bows and a tote bag) will be online within the hour. If you have your heart set on a design, we recommend trying to be online during that time to snag one! We're really thrilled by the interest in the collection! Thank you.

Q: How many dresses did you produce in each design?

A: There are nine designs that we produced. There are between 10 and 30 dresses in each design. We produced the most of the gold and black velvet, and the gingham dress and chevron jumper. Factors included fabric availability, production cost and production time. If there is a specific dress that you have your eye on, we highly recommend shopping on the day of the launch. We can't predict how quickly items will sell out, but they won't be restocked after they sell out.

Q: What sizes are you offering?

A: This season we produced dresses in Small-Large. You can use a tape measure to find your bust, waist, hip measurement (in inches) to see what size you wear. There are three designs that are 'tent dress style', meaning they have an open waist and hips and are meant to be worn belted and they can fit a slightly larger range of sizes. Those dresses are The Kite Day Dress, The Lemon Pie Dress and The Piano Lesson Dress. These three dresses are also the dresses that *will* work for expecting moms (and would be SO cute!).

The only piece that isn't sized Small-Large is the Record Store Jumper. That piece comes in waist sizes 28-32 and has adjustable straps (they can be crossed in the back or straight).

Q: Do you plan to produce plus sized dresses in the future?

A: Due to budget and workload we were unable to design for plus sizes this season. We would love to design for plus sizes at some point in the future! We will have some really cute plus size vintage in the online shop this season.

Q: What was your inspiration for the collection?

A: I was inspired by the mod 1960s. I wanted to create a collection that I would love to wear and that I could see my friends wearing. The line embodies the trends and styles that I am most in love with this year. Creating a dress line was my biggest goal for 2011 and it's been an incredible experience. For the past few months It's all I've thought about day and night. Dream come true!

Q: Did you draw the pattern on The Kite Dress?

A: Yes! I drew the design and Mallory created a pattern with it for our screen printer. Designing textiles is a dream of mine. I want to design a million more prints…. at least. ;)

Q: Was everything made at your shop?

A: Yes. Every single piece was handmade by Mallory in our studio in Springfield, Missouri. Doren and I helped, but she was really the sole producer of the entire collection. She has an incredible attitude and is extremely talented. I absolutely adore working with her! She's been 100% supportive of the Red Velvet vision and we are so happy that she's become a part of our family. We couldn't have done this without her hours upon hours of hard work.

Q: Will you be doing more collections in the future?

A: Yes! We're so excited. Last week we officially invited Mallory back for a summer internship where we will be producing an Autumn collection. I'm over the moon. We've already been sketching and chatting about fabrics non-stop. More details to come on that in the next few weeks.

Let me know if you have any other questions about the new line. I'll be back soon with more dresses! XO, elsie

  • This is such an awesome collection you guys have created! Very inspiring! :] I really love the Kite Day Dress and think you should definitely design more fabrics in the future. x

  • I love that everything was handmade in-house! I’d been wondering about that. Congrats again, this is really inspiring!

  • DO you know about how much or a range that you will be charging. I would like to know so i can set aside money for your GORGEOUS designs

  • Nic, the dresses range $60 to $160 in price. The least expensive pieces are the velvet dresses and the most expensive is the black and white striped dress (I haven’t blogged it yet, but it’s made of velveteen and sateen Dior fabric. It’s gorgeous!). Most designs fall somewhere in between. 🙂

  • 🙁

    My chest is too big.

I think I would consider an operation for those dresses!

Thank you Elsie for at least thinking about the curvy lady. Most designers don’t even do that.

  • You are such an inspiration! I’d like to one day create a collection of cute panty designs. 🙂 Your success encourages me to follow my dream!

  • Hmm… I’m usually a small or medium but my boobies would take the large here! What’s your return policy? I love the items and want to make sure I end up with a size that suits me best.

  • Elsie–

You and your team have amazing talents! Sadly, I won’t be able to fit in any size :/ But here’s hoping for the future!

I would adore buying some fabric, especially the cute kites!

  • since the kite dress is a day dress design, would the measurements be different…for example if I bought a large in the kite dress would it fit 38 inches all the way around??? That would be an option for the curvy ladies who are interested in buying one of your dresses! Thanks Elsie…you and this line are pretty much amazing!

  • Okay, i just went back through the Q&A and answered my own question…sorry about that! I am keeping my fingers crossed that i snag the kite dress before they sell out…i have a strong suspicion that dress in particular is going to be a big seller! I guess i know what i will be doing at 6:00 on Tuesday!!! Thanks again!

  • These are so inspiring! I especially love the gorgeous black velvet!
I LOVE these dresses, but I am concerned that there isn’t one that will fit me.
My measurements are about 41-32-37, so I’m not sure that any of the dresses will fit my bust. But maybe the record store jumper? Do you have any thoughts on what might fit?

  • Amanda Mae- Hi this is Mallory. The largest jumpers we made have a 32 inch waist and the hips are free so it should probably fit. Elsie has the return policy linked a few comments up 🙂

  • I am so excited about your line! Unfortunately I’ll be at a concert (nowhere near a computer) all tuesday night, but keeping fingers crossed that not everything is immediately sold out, the Record Store Jumper would look so good in my closet. Your team is an inspiration!

  • This is such great news!! Most US online shops never have shipping to other countries.. love your collection, will definitely get myself something ^^

  • It’s really lovely to see a shop that doesn’t count a UK size 12 as large, but the actual average size in the UK, a size 16-18 as a normal. Usually, buying cute clothes as a curvier girl is really difficult and it’s so refreshing to see this!

  • This collection is truly beautiful. I am so, so disappointed that nothing is available in a size that will fit me – as always, beauty is for the beautiful, where beautiful = thin. I’m quite happy for Red Velvet & its success, particularly in advance of this exciting moment, but it’s difficult to feel connected to the excitement when the line was created with apparent disregard – or, at least, not enough regard – for the fact that beautiful, fashionable women come in ALL shapes & sizes, not just a teeny-tiny S through a not-much-bigger L. I very much hope you’ll actually be able to put your desire to create for bigger women into reality next time around.

  • Hi there,
I’m so sorry that the dress sizes don’t work for you this season.
As a small business I have to prioritize based on supply and demand. If we sell out of the larger sizes, we will absolutely do a higher quantity next season. In the past we haven’t sold plus sizes very well, but due to the demand this season we are already planning to do more sizes next season. 🙂
Sorry for the wordy response, I just want to make sure that you know that I absolutely would LOVE for everyone to have a dress in their size and that our production decisions this season were based on many business factors and not intended to offend anyone.
I really hope we can make you something that you’ll love next season!
In addition, we have tons of amazing vintage in larger sizes that will be coming to the website soon. We’ve spent tons of time finding new models in a fuller range of sizes. I think you’ll be really happy with the spring vintage selection!
    XXO. elsie

  • Will you be replenishing supplies of items that sold out? I really wanted to get my clutches on the Record Store jumper.

  • Just another person hoping that you will reproduce that kite fabric. I am in love!

  • Woohoo! when you find that *Perfect* dress its worth buying it in ALL the culoors (as with fashion once its gone its gone) p.s I think the pink one is totally amazing on you, I absolutely adore bright fushia ( you’d never guess) You look gorgeous in those london photos. Have you thought of bright yellow accessories, would look great with both pink and purple?
