As many of you already know, Elsie and I are very obsessed with listening to audiobooks. Don’t get me wrong, I love reading too.
But my current season of life feels exceptionally full, so while I don’t get to sit down and read as often as I would like, I still find lots of little moments to listen to audiobooks I’m excited about.
I have been in love with so many titles from Penguin Random House Audio—they are a classic and consistently put out great titles, both fiction and non-fiction and everything in between.
Just to list a few, I loved Untamed by Glennon Doyle. I am excited to finish No Cure for Being Human by Kate Bowler. And next up in the fiction department is The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett and One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus.
And, we have a REALLY exciting giveaway, read more details here. The giveaway is for a Google Nest Audio device and FOUR audio books of your choice! I’m so excited to listen to these titles and am thrilled that one of you will too!
What do you do while listening to audiobooks? I really want to know! I am curious if most people find the time in their commute. I happen to work from home and have for years, so for me I tend to listen during other times.
My number one is on a walk! I go on walks most days around my neighborhood. I usually have my son in his stroller with me, but sometimes I go alone on my lunch break. This is a great time to get in 20-30 minutes of audiobook time.
I also often listen to audiobooks while I edit photos for work. I’m not one of those people that can listen to books or podcasts while I write emails or do anything that requires that type of thinking.
But since editing photos is purely visual, it’s a great time to listen to a few minutes of my current book.
Another one is doing dishes. Ha! We are one of those households where we kind of let the dishes build up all day, or a couple days before doing them. I wanted to show the title of the book I was listening too, but don’t worry, normally the phone sits further away from the sink while I”m doing the dishes. 🙂
It’s probably only 15-20 minutes, but if possible I will squeeze a little listening time in while scrubbing or unloading the dishwasher.
And another task I do while listening to books is laundry. Especially with the arrival of my son, it feels like I fold laundry every other day (which I don’t mind—it’s actually my favorite chore as I like warm clothes from the dryer).
I also tend to steam all of my clothes that need steaming at once, so there’s another few minutes to squeeze a little listening time in.
As you can see from my list, none of these are times when I could read a book, so I love that audiobooks are an option to keep me company during these tasks. And don’t forget to check out the sweepstakes with Penguin Random House Audio!
Leave me a comment of what you are usually doing when you listen to books! xo. Emma

Did anyone else have “learn” how to listen to audiobooks? For me it’s definitely an acquired skill, but one that has doubled my book intake! I have the Libby app linked to my library card and it’s so fun to find good books for listening. I highly, highly, highly recommend “Nothing To See Here” by Kevin Wilson. The book is very good, but the audiobook is GREAT. I also just finished “Stay Sexy and Don’t Get Murdered” by the hosts of the My Favorite Murder podcast. If you’re a murderino, you know. Next up is Kitchen Confidential, which is narrated by the author. Bittersweet, but I’m sure it will be a fun listen.
Oh, to answer, I listen while walking my dogs in the morning, food prepping and cooking, and cleaning. If it’s really good, I’ll listen while I eat a meal too. I’m really, really thankful for audiobooks!
The Book Thief!! Gone with the Wind and Harry Potter!!
I listen while I’m working, I love it!
I listen to audiobooks during my commute, giving me anywhere from 1 to 1 1/2 hours each day of listening time. It takes my mind off the many annoying things drivers do, thus keeping my stress level lower. A win-win situation!
I usually sew while listening but I also love to listen while walking.
I do most of my listening while I commute (about 30 min each way), do chores or walking. But I do always prefer physical books whenever I can (audio books are just convenient…..but I often have to like the reader’s voice/tone/pitch in order to get through a book which is not always the case).
I do household chores while I listen, and then keep looking for more chores if I’m at a good part and don’t want to stop. I never ever listen when I’m outside. I want to fully see and hear everything when I’m hiking with my dog. Especially other dogs who come running up off leash. Plus there are some isolated spots I pass through and I sure as heck want my fill wits about me -as a female, I feel the need to be aware of my surroundings. Wish it wasn’t so!
I definitely listen while commuting to work, it’s a 20 min drive. I also listen when doing chores around the house and if my family is watching something I don’t like or playing a zombie game. I’ll put earphones in and just be near them. You and Elsie convinced me to listen to Jessica Simpson’s book, ha! I really enjoyed it!
I mainly listen to audiobooks while I am cooking. I’m vegan so I spend many hours chopping vegetables ?
Great blog post!! I love audio books too and similar to you, I listen while walking, driving, doing household tasks and also while crafting. I still love reading a book, but listening to a book (especially with a good reader) is becoming almost as good. ?
Hehe the action shots ? Walking, walking. Felt so lonely in lockdown they really helped! So did your podcast! My library has free audio books too like Elsie mentioned before. I pick up a lot of random thing I wouldn’t buy!
