I’m a lifelong fan of Wes Anderson and his colorful, quirky films. One of my favorites (it’s impossible to pick a favorite) is The Life Aquatic. For today’s Style Muse post I am channeling inspiration from the uniforms in the movie to create an outfit for everyday life.
I paired this blue dress with a red hat I already had in my closet. Red hats are a great way to spice up a boring outfit with a pop of color. Plus I don’t know about you, but if I see someone wearing a red hat, I ALWAYS think of The Life Aquatic. It’s just so iconic.
Here are some fun finds of the nautical variety (some are on super sale)—
This is probably the easiest style to mix and match. Nautical stuff is fun and catchy without being super kitschy, and you can mix it with simple pieces like denim, chambray or a white t-shirt. 1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9
This look is so easy to create that you might already have all the ingredients hiding in your closet at home. It makes me smile to pay a little homage to one of my favorite directors with my outfit. So fun! But honestly, other than the color combination, it’s not even remotely costume-y. I’d wear this anywhere. What’s your favorite Wes Anderson film? xx. Elsie

Love me some Wes Anderson! Royal Tenenbaums is a classic, but I really thought Grand Budapest Hotel was phenomenal and beautifully done.
Super cute!
Just to give props where props are due: The red hat/blue shirt combo was in homage to the red beanie and blue shirt that Jacque Cousteau, the most awesome advocate of the oceans, used to frequently wear.

I’m loving those red stripes shoes!

Oh I love this Elsie! I literally just bought myself a blue jacket and crocheted myself a Steve Zissou hat this last weekend. This winter is all about channeling Wes Anderson characters for me… Love his colour palettes, the symmetry, everything about his films!
I just watched all of Wes Anderson’s movies! My favorite is The Darjeeling Limited closely followed by Life Aquatic. I loved this post!
Moonrise Kingdom all the way, but then again I’m a massive muster yellow fan so not surprising! Love love love your dress Elsie <3
Lovely outfit.
Do you know this inspiration for the movie comes from the outfit worn by a French explorer named Jacques Cousteau??

You can google his name and see pics of him at sea in the ouftit 🙂
