At Home With Toshiko Shek

At Home with Toshiko Shek We are so excited to welcome back Toshiko Shek to the blog to share her beautiful apartment with us!

Toshiko ShekObsessed with this closet!"Finding/buying a home in the San Francisco Bay Area is nearly impossible! So until I have millions of dollars, a cute apartment will do! I live in San Mateo, about 10 minutes south of the San Francisco Airport. I love the city, but actual SF is too crowded and busy for my taste. So the peninsula is perfect! I lucked out with this place because the apartment complex was initially built as a condo, meaning SPACIOUS! Even the hallways are super wide and roomy! My place is a 2 bedroom 1 bath unit and about 1100 sq ft. We are using the master bedroom as a closet/office while we sleep in the smaller bedroom. As a stylist and fashion blogger, I have so many shoes and clothes (it's like my library!), but sadly I STILL don't have enough space in this massive room, which also has a walk-in closet and a regular closet.

Decor details"I love is this vintage calla lily lamp in my closet/office. Calla lily is my favorite kind of flower ,but since I have two cats, I can't have any kind of lilies at my home (lilies are highly toxic to cats). When I found this lamp, I knew it was meant to be!

Bright living roomLove this living room"I've been living here for about a year now with my fiancé and two cats! It literally took me about 10 months to finish decorating the entire space. I can decorate and redecorate it over and over if I want to (and I often do), but for now I am pleased with how everything turned out! Overall, I think the insane amount of natural light I get in this place makes everything better!

White wicker chair"My old apartment (which was also featured on ABM here!) was a bit more vintage-y and a little quirkier, but my taste has changed since then. Nowadays I am drawn to neutral tones and find myself lusting after sleeker styles and more modern designs. For a really long time, I was dreaming and hunting for a vintage peacock wicker chair. I looked everywhere, from eBay to Etsy, from garage sales to flea markets…all I could find were ones that cost $300+! Then when I finally stopped looking, I came across an ad for one on Craigslist asking for only $25! Needless to say, I drove over to get it within the hour! It was in excellent condition too! No need to paint or do anything to it! I was sooo stoked! Lastly, I love the mini gallery wall of my entryway, particularly a black and white photo of my fiancé and me kissing in front of the Eiffel Tower.

EntrywayHoneycomb shelvesKichenToshiko"I love every corner of my apartment, but if I must choose one space as my favorite, it would be the balcony! When we first moved in and saw how enormous my balcony was (it's the length of the living room and one of the bedrooms), I knew right away that I wanted to turn it into a garden! Over the past year, we made countless trips to Home Depot (to the point where my fiancé started to loathe that place), we (mostly just me) went on an emotional roller coaster of "yay, my plant looks awesome" and "oh no! please don't die", and now here I am with my dream garden! I just love sitting out there enjoying a cup of tea and taking in all the fresh air! Oh and I get the most gorgeous sunset view every evening!"

Amazing balcony!Plant shelfThank you so much for sharing your space with us! You can find more of Toshiko on her blog and on Instagram. xo.

  • That’s awesome, love the balcony! Plus you have the most awesome name ever 🙂

  • So I am a huge fan of ABM and have been for over three years now, but this post is extra special to me because I’m pretty sure it saved my cat’s life! My favorite flowers are also lilies but I had no idea they were toxic to cats. On Thursday night one of my cats got into our lilies but was acting totally normal so I didn’t think anything of it. When I saw this post I immediately called my vet and took him in and he was in kidney failure even though he was acting fine. After intensive care this weekend, he’s going to be ok, but I just wanted to say THANK YOU for this post. Everything happens for a reason!

  • Beautiful, dying over the shoe shelves!

  • Wow the style in this home is so nicely put together!

  • You might like to know calla lilies are not actually part of the lily family and are fine for cats ?

  • Do you have a blog post about your home? I am intrigued! (Fellow 1 bdrm dweller, aspiring minimalist here).

  • Beautiful apartment! I love the wall of shoes!

  • Beautifully decorated apartment! Love all the plants on the patio. Such great taste.

  • wow, her last place was complete 70’s invasion, and this place is SO 80’s glam 😀

  • Toshiko’s home is lovely! My favorite attribute was the bed spread, so cute. I also love that she has plants everywhere. Very pretty space. I look forward to checking out her blog 🙂

I have a question: Do you ever feature one bedrooms? I feel like I may have missed it, if you have. The reason I ask is because I have a really pretty one bedroom space by the ocean with a yard, porch, and even though there’s three people (at the moment), I have managed to keep it minimalistic and spacious.

    Thanks so much!

  • Hi Laurali! We prefer to feature several rooms in our At Home feature, but we post single room photos to our Instagram account via #ABMathome 🙂 -Jacki

  • Love her closet and all of the plants! I could totally live there.

  • P.S.

Sorry if this is a silly question to ask. I’ve just never seen any tiny places or one bedrooms on ABM. Can’t help but be curious.

  • This home is so beautiful! Love the neutral colors. So many sweet details!

  • This apartment looks just darling! I LOVE the cowhide details in the living room.

  • WOW, what a lovely space! It’s so great to see how much her style has changed since the last time she did a tour with ABM!

  • What a beautiful space! That closet and succulent wall! Yup, I could live there.

  • My favorite is the shoe shelf…. a dream come true! I need to recreate this immediately!

  • Her closet/bedroom is to die for! I’d give anything for a shoe wall like that!

  • This looks so amazing. I’m in love with all the white, this is definitely what I want my future place to look like.

  • Her shoe situation is mind boggling and awesome! I’m most in love with her balcony though. The vertical planter is so awesome!

  • What is the name of the nightstand and dresser? I had a dresser similar to hers as a kid and would like to search for another but I don’t know the style name.

  • Hi Claire! Most of the home submissions that we receive have white walls, but we are totally open to featuring homes with different colored walls! 🙂 -Jacki

  • So cosy and beautiful! I love all the different patterns. Can’t wait to one day have my own house and decorate it! 🙂

    x Val / Valerie Randomness

  • Usually when I see people’s houses, I like some of it but not all. I love all of this one!! I wouldn’t do anything differently; please come decorate my house! =)

  • Tell me more about that white side table with the gold hairpin legs! I LOVE it.

Beautiful outdoor space, too. I’d kill to have that.

  • Everything about this place is gorgeous! That shoe wall is to die for and I adore her honeycomb shelves!

    Warm Regards,

  • wow. it is amazing how drastically different the styling is in this post compared to her last at home with…post. impressive. looks like a nice place! santa cruz and san Francisco are two of my favorite California cities! jealous that she has lived (is living) in both. 😉

  • These places are all so beautiful! I do have an ABM team question for the future, though, do any of your home tours include paint jobs that aren’t all white? I know how much it can brighten up a space, but I’d love some room style inspiration in different colors!
