So then I started thinking on ways to hide the kennel, but making sure it was still accessible for Cooper to go in and out of as he pleased (unless Kelsey closed the kennel dog, of course). And that got me dreaming on some kind of built-in cabinet that could house the dog kennel while also feeling like part of the room.

Once I got the measurements for the space and the dog kennel, I picked up some 4’ by 8’ sheets of MDF and birch plywood to build the cabinet. Since we were going with a painted finish on the outside, I wanted to use the smooth birch plywood on the side you would see. I used MDF for the side that touched the wall and bathroom vanity since it does a great job at withstanding cracking and warping under stress and humidity.

I love this! We’ve got our dog kennel in the living room (I think the exact same one as you) and I’ve been trying to think of a way to make it a little more aesthetic and this is such a cute solution! I think I might have to do something similar, but will probably have to have slits or holes in the wall because our dog likes to watch TV in the morning before he eats his food ?

Poor dog must be hot with the cage closed in. I think the cage you used is build with vented sides for comfort. Might be good in winter. Guess you could add a fan.
Great idea but needs some more thought or room around cage.
Agreed 100%.
Thanks for the concern! He loves his crate, he’s had the same one since he was a puppy, and he only gets locked in there if I leave the house and he’s alone. And since I work from home, he doesn’t get locked in there much at all. That room stays nice and cool, even in summer, and he doesn’t get hot or stifled in there – he loves it! He hangs out and naps in there all the time with the door open, it’s his safe little den.
It looks nice and cozy to me! Also, your dog is adorable!!
That big blank spot on the side by the cabinet door would be a perfect place for kid art, wouldn’t it? Can’t wait to see what you do with it!
That would be super cute! 🙂
So cute!! Would be great for hiding a cat’s litter box too!
