I discovered last summer that the half-up top knot is actually a great way to add some height on top (duh!), and by adding easy waves to the bottom half, you get a more voluminous combo that doesn’t take long at all to complete.
If you’re looking for classic top knot tutorial, check out Emma’s here.
Ready to learn the half-up tousled top knot?
Start by curling your hair with a bigger barrel (at least 1 1/2″) curling iron or curling wand (I love this curling iron).
I like to wrap my hair around the barrel starting at the inside and going out towards the outside of the barrel as you see above. It seems to make a more natural beachy wave if you ask me.
Use a teasing brush to backcomb your mini ponytail from root to tip to pump up the volume of your bun.
Use a few sprays of hairspray to keep your bun and waves in place, and you’re ready to head out the door!
Easy-peasy, right? Depending on your hair type and texture, you may have to play around with different wand sizes to find the perfect tousled curl look (too small can be “too curly” and too big won’t hold a curl at all for me), but once you find your perfect medium, you’ll be all set!
This is also a good option as the weather starts to warm up a bit and you want to keep your hair out of your face at outdoor events but don’t want to do a full updo (I also think this is an extra cute look with sunglasses too for some reason). Give it a try! xo. Laura
