Elsie’s Master Bedroom Tour

Well, this post is a long time coming! I held off on posting this tour for so long because we always planned on upgrading to a king-size bed, but it was something I kept putting off. I am SO happy we finally went for it because it’s been incredible (more on that below). And our bedroom is finally pretty much complete (more on that below too—haha). Welcome to our bedroom tour!

But first, a walk down memory lane. Here’s our bedroom the day we closed on this home. You can see the before photos here (and you can see the first update I shared here). As you can see, the room was dark due to heavy drapes, carpeted, and powder blue. We’ve come a long way! My main focus when designing this room was quality sleep, and that focus has only become even more important since becoming parents. Sleep is such a treasure! We do the thing where we don’t allow devices in our room, no laptops and the phones are supposed to be on airplane mode when we sleep (cough, cough—sometimes my husband “forgets” that step). But it’s something we are striving toward and it’s improved our sleep a LOT. We used to watch TV in bed on our laptops every night, and now now we never do. I even have a BOOK sitting next to my bed now that I actually read!! Haha … the ability to be unplugged is one of many things I envy from my parents’ generation of raising children.

Swapping to a king-size bed was something Jeremy has been pushing for for years. Every single time we stayed in a hotel room with a king-size bed he reminded me how much better our life could potentially be. I was reluctant because I loved our previous bed frame and it was a sentimental gift from my parents. But since adopting Nova and briefly co-sleeping (we’re not anymore, but when you have a 3-year-old you never know …), I finally realized it was time.

After looking at so many mid-century bed frame styles I would typically be drawn to, I just kept coming back to Serena & Lily’s Webster bed. I just love the style of it and it has such a cozy feel. And even though I still pull toward mid-century, I have been pulling in a more mixed-style direction lately. I am so glad I broke my own mold, because this bed is incredible. It’s even prettier in person than it is in photos, if you can believe that.

For the mattress, it is super important to me to have a green/clean mattress. We got one from Keetsa; it is actually our third mattress from them (our first one was for our queen-size bed and also Nova’s bed). You can read more about the materials they use in their mattresses here. This is important to me because we spend so much of our lives asleep. So the materials used in the major elements of our bedrooms (such as the mattress, if there is carpet, etc. …) play a huge role in air quality. And air quality plays a huge role in our overall health. I know this may sound a bit extreme to some, but I have been reading a lot about the materials used to make mattresses and carpet and it changed my point of view quite a bit! So after we moved to this home we decided to start swapping out things for natural materials rather than synthetics anytime we could, which reduces off gassing. Anyway, we chose the Tea Leaf Classic and it is super comfy. Not too soft and not too firm. We also use their pillows.

The pink abstract painting is by my mom, Elizabeth Chapman. She made it to match our home style and I love it so much.

My go-to sleep blend is Lavender and Frankincense essential oils. It’s good for anytime I am feeling stressed or anxious. And when I want something that just smells cozy I go for Lavender and Fir Needle. Here’s a similar diffuser. To the right of our bed we have a little side table, some plants and a painting by Teil Duncan. I adore her style.

I try to keep these areas pretty clean and clutter free because I noticed I sleep better when our room is clean(ish). We read about it when I was struggling with some insomnia and it worked for me!

The little pink dish was a souvenir from a trip to Palm Springs. Now that our home is pretty much “done,” I am trying more than ever to be super selective when bringing things into our home. It’s so easy to collect and collect, but I have been trying to take a different approach this past year especially and only bring things into our home that are sentimental, useful, built to last, etc. …

The basket is from Xinh and Co. in Nashville (I have like 80 of her baskets throughout my home). A bedside basket definitely helps to corral clutter. I use it to store my oils, lotions, hair ties—little things like that.

Living with a minimal mix of art, plants and natural textures is definitely my style “comfort zone” currently.

As far as the future goes … I go back and forth. When we brought in this bed, I didn’t really redecorate. I have gone back and forth on whether I should give this room a new look or just be happy with it forever and ever. I can go either way for sure! Since we are planning a deck renovation next spring (that would turn the window you see below into French doors), I feel like I can wait until that time to decide if I want to make any more updates. What do you think? Finished or not quite finished?

Oh, and we are still waiting on two bedside tables, so I will show you those after they arrive!

On the opposite side of our room we have our dresser (it’s an Ikea hack—you can see the whole thing here) and I recently decided to add a full-length mirror just for convenience. Both are secured to the wall now (toddler safety).

OK … speaking of todders, prepare your hearts for some Nova cuteness.

I am so grateful for this cozy room. Nova sleeps in her own bedroom now, but she often comes in for snuggles in the morning and it’s my favorite thing in the whole world!

I love it when she says, “Mama, do you wanna snuggle?”

The answer is always YES.

Thanks so much for reading! I am so happy to call this space home! xx. Elsie

  • What is your review of the webster bed after a couple of years, does it squeak? How is the bottom constructed? Looking to purchase myself but since it is such an investment wanted to get a review before i pulled the plug.

  • This room is perfect ! What paint colors did you use for ceiling and walls? The wall color looks like blanched coral BM!! One of my favs !

  • Where did your pull down shades on the windows come from?? need some simple ones like this.

  • Sorry for the odd question, but I thought I saw a star pendant light in one of your rooms. For the life of me I can’t seem to find it anywhere. 🙁 I was hoping to get one for my new place. Any chance you could point me in the right direction? I thought I saw it in a kitchen tour….maybe….. 🙂

  • Beautiful room! Thanks for the plug for Keetsa. I have two of their mattresses in my house. I love their products and their environmental responsibility. I didn’t realize they had pillows – I clicked through and bought one. Also, mama do you wanna snuggle is the cutest thing in the entire universe.

  • Wow! Your room is definitely the best place for snuggles with Nova. It’s beautifully done and most of all it’s oozing personality! By the way, I absolutely love your mom’s abstract artwork – what a fit!!

  • Such a lovely room! I can’t believe what it looked like before – YUCK! Haha! That bed is so cool, and yes, I think the King Size bed makes all the difference. When we move we will be getting one STAT!

  • Such a gorgeous transformation! And I’m so happy you included a few Nova pictures at the end there 😉

  • Gorgeous, as always! I’m curious what you’ve read about memory foam (which I think is in Keeto mattresses?)—I’ve done a little bit of research into mattresses and I’m now super freaked out about foam in general, but had read that memory foam disintegrates really quickly and releases fumes. I don’t have a source for that, so not standing behind it, but was just curious if you had found better sources. I’ve been looking at intellibed since they’re supposed to be nontoxic and don’t use foam, but they’re insanely expensive.

  • Gorgeous room. This is not my personal palette but it’s still absolutely lovely (also Nova literally matches your room with her pretty white hair). It looks finished to me, even if you add the French doors (the current window is large enough that it will not make much of a difference aside from the fact you’ll be able to get on the porch from there). The art is perfect for the space (and the fact your mom made one of them is priceless). I’m sure you sleep wonderfully there 🙂

  • Hello friends, there are for sale some original works of art with your certificate and excellent promotions. You just have to contact dicksonshopp1@gmail.com to send them the catalog. Encourage me to buy art, they would help me a lot if they support us and disseminate the information!

  • Love this cozy, fresh feeling! Also, I REALLY love that Ikea hack. I own the same dresser (but in the darker stain) and just bought the smaller version for our baby room. I will definitely be doing something to make them both special now.

  • I totally thought you were going to say Nova painted your art print 🙂 I think she is already that good!

  • That IKEA hack is one that stuck in my brain — I remember seeing the initial post, and I still love what you did with it! What a dreamy room… no pun intended. 😉 Thanks for giving us a peek!

  • Beautiful bed, looks so bright and cozy. The mirror is killing me, lol. Bad Feng Shui to have a mirror facing the bed.

  • It sounds like you’re cultivating all the “best sleep practices”. An additional one you may want to consider is moving the mirror so it doesn’t face the bed. It’s bad mojo according to both feng shui and vastu. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My best to you and your beautiful fam!

  • Every detail is absolutely perfect! I need Elsie to come and do my house for me!

  • I loooove your room. When you first moved in and started sharing pictures of it, it made me revamp our bedroom and it’s made a huge difference in my sleep and general mood! Also, could Nova BE any cuter?

  • I love this room!!

I have to say though, all of the drop down menus and pop ups really broke into my experience, which is such a shame. This room was so well done, but o could only see about half of each picture because the side menu and search bar covered stuff up. I’m using my phone, and it’s not an issue on the computer.

I hope this was helpful, I don’t like being negative!! Thank you for producing such fun, vibrant content!

    • Thanks for letting us know! This is definitely an error, and we’ll get it fixed asap. 🙂

  • Love it! Question…where did you get your plant holders? I love them and am in the market for these…also we have a 3.5 year old and 20 month old. How did these fare with Nova? Does she get in them and are they easy to tip over? Sorry for all the questions, so many things to consider with toddlers 🙂

    Thanks- adore your site!

    • They are from West Elm a couple years ago (do you mean the ones on the wall?) xx

  • OMG she is adorable! I don’t have kids and I’m not a homeowner yet, but your posts inspire me to get on both of those ASAP as I turn 30 this week! LOL. I am loving the new room style. It’s a classic look that is here to stay!

  • Hands down, my favorite transformation you’ve ever done! Inspired to regift a few treasures that have been collecting dust on my bedroom dresser and just don’t seem to fit there. Inspiring mix of styles in this room- it just clicks beautifully!

  • Beautiful transformation! You’ve come a long way since that blue carpet! I’m envious of your king size bed and your beautiful hardwood floors. xo

  • Amazing transformation! I love the pink hues of the new bedroom. It’s beautiful! 🙂 ????
